CARPE DIEM 35in and 60in Height

“Seize the day”- Horace    A comical-looking young man is riding a unicycle, pedaling as fast as he can. The unicycle is in fact a fob watch: the hands are the unicycle pedals, the winder is the seat, and the ring for the chain is used as a guide. The hour numbers on the face, all in different fonts, represent the multiple facets of Time, its incessant fluctuations.

Baffled, the figure insists nonetheless on going forward. Gripping the bar, he is holding up a finger as if to shout, “Wait!”. His face, with its equine smile, is straining towards his destination. Everything about him is reminiscent of a race, of quick movement: his traits are equine and his posture is similar to that of a jockey in the heat of a race. His clothes -particularly his shoes- look like the gear worn by cyclists in the Tour de France. They also resemble the livery worn by grooms or clerks, who are always busy. He would like to go faster but his unicycle is battered, the tire is flat, the watch is losing its springs: he is fighting against Time, who outstrips him despite his best efforts.

We live in an increasingly rushed world; we are eternal runners; Carpe Diem is a call to appreciate the present moment. In fact, I believe we are mistaken to fight against time: our subjective perception often brings us to say that time passes too quickly, when what it is really doing is simply passing.
